A General Mokelumne Hill Town History

The first non-natives to live in the area were reputedly French trappers who settled in Happy Valley in the 1830s. Leading the Gold Rush miners to the area was Captain Charles M.

Did you know?

  • Too many men!

    In 1850, at the height of the Gold Rush, there were 62 males for every female in Calaveras County. By 1860, the ratio was just over 6:1.
