Archives and Organizations

Calaveras County Archives, 46 Main Street, San Andreas.  209-754-3918, calaverasarchives@att.net.  Hours are 9-3, Monday and Wednesday.  Contains an archive of County Records, including Deeds, Assessment Rolls, Great Registers of Voters, Land Patents, Homesteads, Mining Claims, Water Rights, Board of Supervisors Minutes, Court Cases, Townsite Maps, and other records generated by County Government.  In addition, the Archives has a large selection of photographs, family genealogy files, information on towns and communities, and the research files of Frances Bishop, a local historian. 

 Calaveras County Historical Society, 30 Main Street, San Andreas.  209-754-1058.  The Historical Society operates the County Museum, archives photographs of local people and sites, and publishes Las Calaveras, a Quarterly Bulletin, on local history topics.

Mokelumne Hill History Society, Mokelumne Hill Library/Archives, 8328 Main Street, Mokelumne Hill. The town Archives contains over 2,000 scanned and indexed photographs and files on local families and places. Reference binders are publicly available in the library reading room, or send inquiries through the town website: MokeHill.org.

Angels Camp Museum and Carriage House.  753 South Main Street, Angels Camp.  209-736-2963.  The Museum exhibits a large collection of rolling stock, and objects on the history of Angels Camp and Mining.   

Ancestry.com.  The best site for genealogical information:  births, marriages deaths, Great Registers of Voters, City and Count Directories, school books, military records, land patents, and many others.  The site requires membership, but most archives and libraries have access. 

Calaveras County Geneological Society. The society owns a large selection of genealogical research books, periodicals, and magazines in a dedicated reserved section at the Calaveras County Library in San Andreas.  Through their website – calaverasgenealogy.com – requests can be made for assistance in researching past Calaveras County residents.
